"If the world hates you, know that it hated me first. Amen, Amen, I say to you, no servant is greater then his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also."
I think the words of Holy Writ speak for themselves here, don't you Bridget Mary?
John Steward is about as credible in matters pertaining to the Catholic Church as Hans Kung is. Oh, thats right- you actually think Hans Kung is a credible witness to anything Catholic, so it is little wonder why you actually believe John Stewart knows what he is talking about.
Two points: First, may I remind you that even the devil can quote Scripture?????
Second: What specifically is your problem with Kung? I mean, cite me some specifics. Have you ever heard him speak? I have. Even got his autograph. But, that is beside the point. I really want to know what your specific problem with Kung is. I have heard a lot of people speak out against someone without having a clue what that person was actually saying.
I do not laugh when people mock my Faith. I do not laugh when people mock the Church. I do not find it in the least bit funny. Perhaps you find it funny, but I don't.
To mock the Church is to mock Jesus. Perhaps you enjoy it when the Catholic Church is mocked on national television, I don't. Mocking the Church to me is akin to taking your husband on television and proceeding to mock him. If Steward publically mocked your husband on national television and I said "Lighten up" how would you feel?
Comedy Central would not DARE do that to Jews, or there would be a good bit of "outrage." They would not DARE to that to Muslims either, but Muslims would not put up with that. They wouldn't wait for the Liberal Drive By to manufacture sufficient "outrage" they would take care of it themselves.
There is appropriate humor when dealing with religions and there is just plan rude and obnoxious. Steeward was not funny in the least, he was obnoxious. Unfortunately nothing will happen to him becasue he mocked the Catholic Church- something which is seen as politically correct. It is alright to mock the Catholic Church, but not alright to mock any other religion.
Yes, I know even the devil can quote Scripture--- what does that have to do with my post?
As for Kung- I could cite numerous examples, but I think one should suffice: "Infallible? An Inquiry."
Interestingly enough Kung was quite content to defend the concept of an infallible Church when the Church taught things he liked. All of a sudden the Church reasserts it's teaching on Contraception and Kung don't think the Church is infallible no more. Why? Becasue now the Church taught something he dosen't like. Therefore he concludes, it must not be infallible.
Apologist, They were not mocking Our FAITH, they were making fun, using sarcasm to further comment on The Pope's lack of ownership of the historical problem of "moving the clergy around" instead of taking action to defrock these criminals. That is NOT mocking our faith. The Everlasting love of our Lord jesus Christ is our faith! Leave my husband off of the blog. There is no similarity as he has not ignored the reporting and prosecution of crime.
You can not take the heat Apololgist. You can not realize that the persons that committed these horrific abuses separated themselves from Jesus each and EVERY time they continued to allow such crimes to continue. The CHURCH officials are blatantly outright wrong in not managing their personnel/crime issues with swift immediate action of removal of the perpetrators. Church officials are those that are in the offices of the church. WE THE PEOPLE are the real church ! Children must not be sacrificed to adult monsters to protect Church Office Reputation.
Deal with it Apologist.
I am disappointed that you would bring comparisons of other Religious organizations such as the Jews, and Muslims and the statement of:
""""""Comedy Central would not DARE do that to Jews, or there would be a good bit of "outrage." They would not DARE to that to Muslims either, but Muslims would not put up with that. They wouldn't wait for the Liberal Drive By to manufacture sufficient "outrage" they would take care of it themselves.""""""""
Your statement screams of religious bias and discrimination against other human beings.
What exactly do you mean in your statement ?
And what would you like to see happen to see to Mr. Steward and his writing staff ?
Your statements of: """"""""Unfortunately nothing will happen to him becasue he mocked the Catholic Church- something which is seen as politically correct. It is alright to mock the Catholic Church, but not alright to mock any other religion.""""
....What do you want to see happen to Mr. Steward ?
You certainly are an angry man. Better be careful or you will burst a major blood vessel.
I totally agree with Linda. Steward is not mocking our religion. He is pointing to the absurdity of the hierarchy dragging its collective feet in the face of scandals and cover-ups.
You said somewhere that you would put the reputation of the reputation of the institutional church before that of the members. That too is absurd -- and not at all what Jesus would do.
You asked me what my statement about even the devil being able to quote Scripture had to do with your point. Go up to the top of this blog-comment box. There you will see that you started your initial comment with a Scriptural quote. You opened the door; I merely walked in.
Now, about Hans Kung --> What is wrong with questioning infallibility? People -- including bishops and cardinals -- have been questioning it since its inception. Puis IX was a fruitcake anyway and there is serious doubt that the doctrine of infallibility can even be a true doctrine. So many of the bishops were in disagreement that they walked out before the vote was taken. There was no quorum when Pius IX called for the vote!
Have you ever read the "Syllabus of Errors" by Pius IX? Try it and you might get an eyeful of changes in church teaching.
Why do you believe that every utterance that comes out of the Vatican is infallible? It is not.
Deal with it!
Getting back to Kung for a moment --> what is wrong with changing or modifying one's thinking? We all do it -- continuously. Our thoughts and understandings of just about everything are constantly evolving.
You call yourself the Catholic Apologist. I think you ought to apologize for calling yourself Catholic.
What would I like to see happen to Mr Stewart? Simple: I want a public apology and I want him to treat the Catholic Church on his Comedy Central Network the very same way he treats every other religion. A good rule of thumb I want him to follow is very simply "If this routine would be considered inappropriate if it involved the Jewish or Muslim Faith, then I should not do it with the Catholic Faith." In other words, I want Mr Stewart to treat the Catholic Church in the same manner he treats all other Churches.
The Church officials Linda, are wrong, or were wrong as the case may be in how they handled the abuse crisis. I am not nor have I ever defended their actions. They should have, and could have removed abusive priests and they didn't. The media rightly reports on this fact. My problem is not that the media reported on it, but that they don't let the matter drop.
Why is it you can't turn on the TV anymore without hearing about the sex abuse crisis? Why is it the media never reports on the good things the Church is doing? Why is it the media never reports on the majority of priests who live their calling and love what they do? Why is it the media largely ignored a report about sex abuse in public schools?
The Church unfortunately cannot turn back the clock Linda. How I wish they could. How I wish the bishops could go back in time and change what they did, and remove the abusive priests from ministry. But hindsight is always 20/20. It is easy for people today to tell the Church leaders what they should have done, but what good does it do now? The damage is done. The only remedy is for the bishops to get policy in place and make sure they follow it.
As far as I know that is happening. If a priest is accused the Dioceses do not play around and twiddle their thumbs. They turn over the information to the law and let the law take it from there. And it is this which the media is also ignoring. You don't hear what the Church has done to remedy the sitution, and how it is working.
"If the world hates you, know that it hated me first. Amen, Amen, I say to you, no servant is greater then his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also."
