Trial of Bradley Manning: Whistleblower Working for Common Good/Raises Issues for Freedom of the Press/Media in Age of Terrorism

"He wanted people to see the  truth. He was hoping things would change based on that information." (David Combs, Defense for Bradley Manning, Trial at Ft. Meade)

Bridget Mary's Reflection:
Let us pray that the results of the trial  of Bradley Manning affirm our country's tradition of protecting whistleblowers who act for the common good.  This case raises freedom of information issues for the press and mainstream media. What is their role in this age of terrorism to inform the public to issues of common concern such as human rights abuses by our government? While I understand that we live in an age of terrorism and some information will need to be classified, we also live in a democracy. The best weapon against terrorism is the truth and transparency by all governments. We have a right to information and the duty to respond responsibly as citizens of our country and as people of good will who work for justice and peace everywhere. This will always be in our best interests as a nation under God  and in the best interest of all people on earth.
