Prayers for Peace

Image 1

All: In the name of our God, Creator of an evolving planet and humanity, our
brother Jesus Prince of Peace, and Sofia Wisdom blessing us with the will to
be peace in our world.  Amen

All: Opening Prayer:

As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, let us clothe ourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.   Let us bear with
one another, and forgive each other; just as God has forgiven us, so we also
must forgive. Above all, let us clothe ourselves with love, which binds
everything together in perfect harmony. As always, in Jesus' name we pray,
Amen."

(Adapted from Col 3:12-14)

First Reading: Pope Francis "Speech to the United Nations" Sept 25 2015

"War is the negation of all rights and a dramatic assault on the
environment.  If we want true integral human development for all, we must
work tirelessly to avoid war between nations and between peoples.  To this
end, there is a need to ensure the uncontested rule of law and tireless
recourse to negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, as proposed by the
charter of the United Nations, which constitute truly a fundamental
juridical norm.

...the preamble and first article of the Charter of the United Nations set
forth the foundations of the international juridical framework: peace, the
pacific solution of disputes and development of friendly relationships
between the nations.  Strongly opposed to such statements, and in practice
denying them, is the constant tendency to the proliferation of arms,
especially weapons of mass destruction, such as nuclear weapons....There is
an urgent need to work for a world free of nuclear weapons, in full
application of the non-proliferation treaty, in letter and spirit, with the
goal of a complete prohibition of these weapons."  This is an inspired word
of God   All: Thanks be to God

Psalm Response:

All:  Never again will we train for war.

Mercy and truth have embraced;

Justice and peace will kiss

Truth shall spring out of the earth,

And justice will look

Down from heaven.  (Psalm 85)

All:  Never again will we train for war.

"Come, let us climb Yahweh's mountain

To the Temple of God

That we may be instructed in God's ways

And walk in God's paths."

Instruction will be given from Zion...

God will judge between the nations

And render decisions for many countries.

They will beat their swords into plowshares

And their spears into pruning hooks,

One nation will not raise the sword against another,

And never again will they train for war.  (Isaiah 2:2-5)

All:  Never again will we train for war.

We last no longer than grass,

Live no longer than a wildflower;

One gust of wind and we're gone,

Never to be seen again.

Yet Your love lasts from age to age...

As does Your goodness to our children's children.  (Psalm 103)

All:  Never again will we train for war.

Second Reading From the journal of Katy Scott

"I was in denial that Jason would participate fully in this war.  The San
Francisco Chronicle embedded a reporter with his platoon and on June 5,
reported that Jason's men had fired on and destroyed a pick-up and the
persons inside.  I wrote the following:

A poem of sorrow

A mother waits

A messenger comes to her door

The sun stops in its course across the sky

And plunges her world into night.

Sorrow so deep

Her wail so strong

It broke my heart

Here in Chicago this day.
