As I leave Ireland today I carry St. Brigid’s spirit within me!
St. Brigid represents women in ecclesiastical leadership as a powerful symbol of spiritual authority, pastoral care, and prophetic witness. As abbess of Kildare, she exercised episcopal functions, led a double monastery of women and men, and was venerated as a bishop in early Irish Christianity. Her life testifies to a time when women’s leadership was honored in the Church, and her legacy continues to inspire contemporary movements for gender equality, inclusive ministry, and the restoration of women’s full sacramental roles like the International Roman Catholic Women Priests Movement.
