Painting - Piaceski

Peg:

Welcome to our liturgical gathering on this Thursday afternoon. We thank our readers and IT team for being part of our liturgical team today. When speaking, please unmute contribute your thoughts and when you are finished, remember to re-mute yourself.  Have bread and wine/juice in front of you for communion. On Holy Thursday we celebrate the Real Presence of Christ in this sacred meal, in loving service to our sisters and brothers and in all that has life.

Opening Hymn: Companions on the Journey: Carey Landry

Opening Prayer:

Bridget Mary:

Holy One, we gather together with loving hearts in memory of Jesus who shared meals at an open table with tax collectors, prostitutes and all who followed him. We remember how Jesus gathered with his friends, teaching, healing and serving them. On the night before he died, he washed their feet and broke, blessed and shared Bread and Wine at a Passover Meal. We give thanks for this sacred meal, the Bread of Life and the Cup of Blessing, the Real Presence of Christ that we share with each other in memory of Jesus on this Holy Thursday. May we be the hands and feet of Christ in loving service to all in need and prophetic witnesses for justice and equality. Amen.

Transformation Rite:

Bridget Mary: O Holy One, you call us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. For the times we have failed to love others, we say:

All: I love you, I am sorry, please forgive me, thank you. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Russ: First Reading: On Being a Eucharistic Community

Meals are the most frequent settings for Gospel stories. They range from informal picnics on hillsides to banquets given by dignitaries. They introduce us to some of the most of diverse and colorful of Gospel characters: a woman with long hair who washes Jesus’ feet, a little boy who has loaves and fishes hidden in the folds of his robe, and a short man, named Zacchaeus, who is about to have an unexpected dinner guest. Meals transport us from the wedding in Cana to a quiet dinner at a little house in Emmaus. They invited us to a party for a prodigal and let a share of a Passover supper with a carpenter’s son.

This theme of inclusivity is one of the benchmark of Jesus’ teaching. Everyone ought to have a place at the table, especially those who have been marginalized. Obviously, this includes many who do not qualify for the guest list–people who have been relegated to the back roads and slums of the towns. When we give a luncheon, we need to make sure that no one who wants to be there is left out. Inclusivity is a Gospel mandate. It is not separate from Sabbath observance, but essential part of it.

Joan M: Second Reading: A Reading from the Gospel of John

After washing their feet, Jesus put his clothes back on and returned to the table. He said to them,

“Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me ‘Teacher’ and Sovereign’ – and rightly, for so I am. If I, your Teacher and Sovereign, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done. These are the inspired words from the Gospel of John and we respond by saying, Thanks be to God.

Kathryn: Gospel: A Reading from the Gospel according to Luke:

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, "Take and eat; this is my body. Do this in remembrance of me"

He then raised high the cup of blessing, spoke the grace, and offered them the wine saying:

Take and drink of the covenant made new again through my life,

for you. Whenever you do this, remember me!

These are the inspired words from the Gospel of Luke and we respond by saying, Thanks be to God.

Homily Starter: Bridget Mary:

\:

On Holy Thursday, we celebrate Eucharist, the Real Presence of Christ in this sacred meal and within us, the Body of Christ on earth. When Jesus took bread, blessed, broke and gave it to those at table, He did not say, as Richard Rohr reminds us: “Think about this,” “Prove this,” “Look at this,” “Carry this around,” and, surely not, “Argue about this.” He just said, “Eat this . . . and drink all of you” (Matthew 26:26-27).

We spent much of our history arguing about the “how” and the “if” and who could do what Catholics called the “transubstantiation” of the bread and wine instead of simply learning how to be present

We made the Eucharist into a magic act to be believed instead of a personal transformation to be experienced. We changed bread more than people, it seems to me. We emphasized the priest as the “transformer” instead of the people as the transformed.”

Let us reflect on the Real Presence of Christ in Eucharist not as a doctrine to be believed but a Presence to contemplate and experience.

Jesus calls all his followers to eat and drink at the Banquet Table and to "wash feet" in memory of him. This means to love one another in concrete ways that build community and foster the flourishing  of life for all people and all creation. As we  eat and drink this sacred meal and serve our sisters and brothers in words and actions, we are the Body of Christ, Real Presence of Christ broken, blessed and shared with the world.

Bridget Mary Homily Sharing:

How would you describe the Real Presence of Christ today? Has your awareness evolved through the years? What did you hear in our readings today?

Statement of Faith

Peg: Please join in praying our Statement of Faith:

Peg and All: We believe in one God, a divine mystery

beyond all definition and rational understanding,

the heart of all that has ever existed,

that exists now, or that ever will exist.

We believe in Jesus, messenger of God's Word,

bringer of God's healing, heart of God's compassion,

bright star in the firmament of God's

prophets, mystics, and saints.

We believe that we are called to follow Jesus

as a vehicle of God's love,

a source of God's wisdom and truth,

and an instrument of God's peace in the world.

We believe that God's kin-dom is here and now,

stretched out all around us for those

with eyes to see it, hearts to receive it,

and hands to make it happen.

Prayers of the Community:

Anna: As we prepare for the sacred meal, we bring to this table our blessings, cares, and concerns. Please feel free to voice your concerns beginning with the words, “I bring to the table…”

Anna:  (at conclusion)  We pray for these and all unspoken concerns. Amen.
