What happens when a Roman Catholic woman priest receives a mysterious invitation to the Vatican—and discovers that someone is willing to kill to keep a secret buried?
Well, my friends, that is where the fun begins!
I am delighted to introduce my new mystery novel, The Vatican Invitation, a story that combines my love of the Catholic Church, my passion for women's equality, my Irish sense of humor, and my lifelong conviction that the Holy Spirit has a wonderful way of opening doors that some people would prefer to keep locked!
After writing many books about spirituality, prayer, women in the Bible, and the movement for women priests, I decided it was time to have a little fun with fiction.
What better setting for a mystery than the Vatican, where centuries of history, beautiful art, ancient archives, powerful personalities, and more than a few secrets offer endless possibilities?
Of course, I couldn't resist putting a courageous woman priest right in the middle of it all!
Meet Brigid O'Malley: A Woman Priest Who Doesn't Take No for an Answer
My fictional heroine, Rev. Dr. Brigid O'Malley, is an Irish-American Roman Catholic woman priest with a courageous heart, a lively sense of humor, and a remarkable talent for finding herself where women priests aren't exactly expected—or welcomed!
Brigid has spent much of her life walking through doors that others have told her are closed.
When she receives a mysterious invitation from a Vatican insider known only as Phoebe, she wonders whether something extraordinary is about to happen.
Could secret conversations within the Vatican lead to a breakthrough for women's equality in the Catholic Church?
Could courageous women working behind the scenes be preparing the way for historic change?
Or is something much more dangerous unfolding?
Before Brigid can discover the answers, Vatican archivist Father Luca Moretti collapses and dies at her feet.
His final words point toward a clandestine group called the Impossible Circle.
Suddenly, Brigid finds herself caught in a deadly mystery involving hidden documents, secret alliances, betrayal, and people who will do almost anything to protect their power.
And she thought dealing with Church authorities was challenging enough!
A Vatican Mystery with an Unlikely Cast of Characters
As Brigid follows the clues, she encounters a suspicious Swiss Guard, a fearless elderly nun, and extraordinary women whose quiet service within the Vatican has made them nearly invisible.
Together, they uncover a trail leading through ancient Roman churches, secret archives, mysterious catacombs, and the corridors of the Apostolic Palace.
Unexpected twists, dangerous encounters, surprising friendships, and moments when Brigid's Irish wit may be almost as useful as her prayers await.
But as more bodies appear, Brigid discovers that the greatest threat may not come from those who openly oppose reform.
It may come from someone who wants to control reform for their own purposes.
And that raises a question that reaches beyond the pages of fiction:
Who decides when the Church is ready for change—and who is willing to risk everything to make it happen?
Why I Wrote This Mystery
For twenty years, I have been part of the international Roman Catholic Women Priests Movement. I was ordained a priest in Pittsburgh in 2006 and a bishop in 2009.
During these years, I have witnessed extraordinary women courageously answering God's call, often in the face of criticism, rejection, and institutional opposition.
I have also discovered that the journey of reform can bring surprises, unlikely friendships, unexpected blessings, and, yes, some rather humorous situations.
Sometimes you have to laugh!
As I often say, I have a ministry of holy irritation. I believe that loving the Church means having the courage to challenge injustice and to help create something new.
That conviction inspired this novel.
Although The Vatican Invitation is fiction, its deeper themes are close to my heart: women's spiritual authority, courage in the face of opposition, the misuse of religious power, and the transforming possibilities of love, justice, and equality.
I wanted to write a story that would entertain readers while inviting them to imagine what might happen if courageous women helped uncover truths that could change the Church.
And I wanted readers to enjoy a good mystery along the way!
A Little Holy Mischief Can Go a Long Way!
One of the joys of writing this novel was creating Brigid O'Malley.
She is not a perfect heroine. She asks questions, challenges assumptions, takes risks, and occasionally finds herself in situations where a more cautious woman might have stayed home and enjoyed a nice cup of tea.
But where would the adventure be in that?
Brigid believes that faith and courage belong together. She also knows the Holy Spirit sometimes works through unexpected people, especially those overlooked or underestimated.
I have always believed that God has a sense of humor.
After all, who would have imagined that an Irish-born woman who grew up praying the rosary with her family would one day become a Roman Catholic woman priest and bishop—and then write a Vatican murder mystery?
My mother, who had mountain-moving faith, might have smiled and said, "Well, Allanah Mac Croi ( Irish for child of my heart), God certainly works in mysterious ways!"
And she would have been right.
More Than a Mystery: A Story of Hope
Beneath the suspense, secrets, and unexpected dangers, The Vatican Invitation is ultimately a story about hope.
It celebrates women who refuse to be silenced, friendships that cross boundaries, and the courage to speak the truth, even when it comes at a cost.
It also reminds us that the Church's future does not belong exclusively to those in positions of authority.
The Spirit speaks through ordinary people, courageous reformers, faithful questioners, and women who refuse to give up on their dreams.
Sometimes the most important doors open because someone finally dares to turn the handle.
And sometimes someone pulls up another chair and says, "There's room for you at this table!"
Come Along for the Adventure!
Join Brigid O'Malley on her unforgettable journey into the Vatican's heart.
You will encounter mystery, danger, unexpected allies, courageous women, and more than a little holy mischief.
I hope you will laugh, wonder, turn the pages eagerly, and perhaps imagine some new possibilities for the future of our beloved Church.
Most of all, I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed creating it.
The Vatican Invitation is now available on Amazon.
If you enjoy the book, I would be deeply grateful if you would share it with friends, recommend it to your book club, or leave an Amazon review. Your encouragement helps introduce these stories to new readers.
And who knows? Brigid O'Malley may have more mysteries waiting for her. After all, the Church holds plenty of secrets—and she has never been particularly good at minding her own business!
With love, laughter, and blessings,

Sometimes holy mischief is just what the Church needs.
