FutureChurch urges full and transparent investigation of McCarrick coverup; Applauds Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s recent call for full cooperation with law enforcement
FutureChurch calls on Pope Francis and the U.S. Bishops to order a full, immediate, and impartial investigation of any and all allegations of cover up in the case of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

On Saturday, August 25, 2018, former apostolic nuncio Carlo Maria Vigano released an 11-page document alleging that a number of prelates, including Pope Francis, had full knowledge of Cardinal McCarrick’s sexual misconduct and did nothing to stop it.

While many respected leaders and experts in the Church rightly question the motivations behind Vigano’s accusations, FutureChurch believes that victims of clergy sexual abuse and all Catholics deserve a full and transparent accounting from those in authority who handled reports of McCarrick’s exploitations and abuses.

“Catholics deserve the unvarnished truth when it comes to how those in authority responded to clergy sexual abuse and its cover up,” said Deborah Rose-Milavec, executive director of FutureChurch. “We urge Pope Francis and the U.S. Bishops to engage in a robust, independent, and transparent examination of the facts with laity in leadership as a step toward re-establishing trust with Catholics in the U.S. and elsewhere.”

FutureChurch joins Cardinal Blase Cupich in calling for a full investigation into the facts that is overseen by laity. We also urge church officials to release all information pertaining to abusive clerics and those who covered up and to heed Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s call for full cooperation with law enforcement.

“Now is the time to set aside personal agendas and political tactics and focus on seeking justice for victims through a dogged pursuit of the truth,” said Russ Petrus, associate director of FutureChurch. “We encourage all Catholics to contact their bishops and cardinals and demand that they support a thorough and impartial investigation of the McCarrick scandal and all ongoing abuse and cover up.”
