Homily for Ordination of Phillis Sheppard ARCWP as a Deacon , August 26, 2022- Meditation on Phoebe as Deacon and the Community's Call to Service by Bridget Mary Meehan ARCWP

Bridget Mary Meehan ARCWP

I ‘d like to begin our shared homily with a guided meditation to take a deeper dive into diaconal ministry . I will share prayer prompts. Feel free to flow as Spirit guide you, stay in any of the prayer prompts as long as you wish, or move on with me.

Breathe in and out slowly and deeply, conscious of the Holy One’s boundless love embracing every fiber of your being, every cell in your body.

Imagine that Phoebe is with us in our sacred circle as we prepare to celebrate the ordination of our sister, Phillis…

Is there anything you’d like to ask Phoebe about what it was like to be a female leader in a first century flourishing community or about her partnership with Paul? …

Is there anything you’d like to share with her about your journey?...

Like our sister, Phoebe, you are a living text of the Gospel, one -of -a -kind image of the Holy One -with unique gifts to share with those in need. Be mindful of your gifts…

Consider any new birthing of the Spirit – ways that you are being called to follow Jesus’ teachings and example in caring for others… the planet, justice, non-violence, or other ways…

Like our sister, Phoebe. and our brother Paul, we are followers of Jesus and partners in ministry, united in a love that serves all,

We give thanks for our sister, Phillis and for each other as we continue our sharing now.  Amen, Alleluia!
